foxglove086: daniel popsicle "live @ yoshi's" cd-r the scattered, energetic sounds of this revolving combo rise up from the vodka soaked floors. daniel popsicle is the brainchild of dan plonsey, known for his saxophone contributions to robert horton's various works. this sprawling collection spans 25 tracks and puts together over an hour of recordings from daniel popsicle monstrous 160-minute performance from 9/30/02 (it's a mere coincidence that i am releasing this exactly 3 years to the day). as plonsey explains, "i founded the daniel popsicle ensemble in response to anthony braxton's late-90s declaration: 'we must now write music for the next millenium! we'll make billions!'" inspired by thai brass bands, indian wedding bands, new orleans brass bands, ironic dutch bands, sun ra arkestra, junior high stage bands, and braxton himself, plonsey has assembled one of the finest and most underappreciated jazz ensembles on the planet. 20 musicians appear on this release playing everything from guitar, drums, saxophone, and flute to cumbus, balinese percussion, and acrosonic organ. this is a monster with a life of its own. comes in handmade covers, each one different, drawn by plonsey, his wife mantra, and their two sons, cleveland & mischa. 100 copies |
