Formed by No Fun head honcho Carlos Giffoni, Death Unit is an underground super group consisting of Mouthus? Brian Sullivan on guitar, Giffoni on electronics and the skullcrushing tandem of Trevor Tremaine (Hair Police) and Chris Corsano on drums. Going by these names you know you?re in for a cruel ride and ?Infinite Death? largely makes that promise come true with two tracks stuffed with low end guitar buzzes and splintering cymbal crashes all effectively spiked by Giffoni?s electronic torment.
The quartet?s first release, an LP on Hospital Productions, earlier this year, showed the group?s remarkable strength as a genuine team. Rather than four individual talents just messing around in some basement, they seemed to gel from the bat and that?s where ?Infinite Death? picks up again with a possessed (as ever) Corsano announcing thunder from the second the record commences. From that point: fire.
There?s no guitar sound better suited for this kind of scuzz rock than the Sullivan muffle. Venomous, righteously electric and stuffed beneath a thick layer of misty ambience. It?s stark presence is felt throughout the whole album, with Giffoni there to make sure every sound gets electrocuted and Tremaine and Corsano pounding away on their kits like some monstrous hardcore/freejazz hybrid. Again and again and again, Corsano remains a man who mystifies the borders of drumming, using his kit and all his sidelined toys as transmitters of raw creativity rather than just sheer brutal force.
The two tracks presented here trash into eachother like hail stones into stormy seas and don?t differ much in approach and that might be the album?s sole achilles heel. It sounds like a continuous hell jam without much space to built up tension. With Death Unit, you just know what to expect and if you?re in the mood for a ravaging freerock unit than this is the army you?re looking for. A great way to start the new year. 8/10 --
