J. Marinelli "Pity The Party"
The one band may be a common phrase, but as a genre it has been pretty light in recruitment. Aside from vaudeville acts and maybe some circus gigs, only Hasil Adkins comes to mind as someone who has taken the concept and got a Rock freak on. Enter J. Marinelli, drumming with his feet and making a barbaric yawp with his hands on electric guitar. This eight song EP shutters and shocks, and rocks rocks rocks, mixing his punk with a little rockabilly and lot of smart humor. The result is angry, raw fun.
?8th Grade? and the title track imply an early warping as a reason for being pissed off. ?A Little Action,? ?Dear Joan Letter? and ?Here Comes Erik? are roaring demands to be taken seriously, or at least feared. ?400 More Years? and (I Wanna Be On The Cover Of)Ellegirl? are classic rock songs, about wanting to be immortal in worst, most garish fashion. Amen.
If you are of a mind that music is just some tool used to keep out human voices on the subway, or to use for ringtones (and you must not be, since you are reading this amazing zine), or if you have forgotten that rock was meant to be offensive and celebrate freedom, this is a good primer on what glory rock can be when the artist just plugs in, turns it up to 10, and raves on. 8/10 --
