Pleasant Brothers deliver a sweet, un-ironic pop sound that would almost invite comparisons to soft-rock, if it weren?t for the fact that this record does rock when it wants. The brothers are a duo from Detroit, and the underlying theme of the record seems to be the memories and the sounds of the city as they have influenced the band. There is a mix of pop, funk and reggae, with the occasional nod to Motown.
There are no drums on the five songs here, allowing the acoustic and electric guitars and bass, as well as the lyrical hooks drive the grooves. That the most frequent emotions are hope and fun are shocking in the context of Detroit itself, long suffering as it has from crime and corporate sell-out. But Pleasant Brothers do seem sincere in their notion that the city will thrive again, and that they want to be there to help the party. This is uplifting music in many senses of the word. 5/10 --
