A double disc debut album on CocoRosie?s label Voodoo-EROS sounds pretty ambitious, right? Well, madman Quinn Walker has recorded and self-released butt-loads of albums before this one. Not to mention his work with Brooklyn pop band Suckers.
Mr. Walker is a one man fun house band with the eccentricity of your neighborhood crackhead,?but loveable. The album sounds like if you and your homies decided to each eat an eighth of shrooms and go busking in the park with the added advantage of having Brian Wilson behind the helm as your main songwriter. Pretty wild in theory, but Quinn makes it happen, as he coveys a wide range of moods and emotions through his bedroom recordings; from solitary psychouts to jangly pop tunes.
Layered voices, howls, yipping falsetto and instrumentation are all played and produced by Quinn himself (aside from a guest trumpet, backup vocal, and cell phone bleep) culminating in a sort of experimental pop sound.
With two discs for the price of one, there is more than enough music here to keep occupied for some time. Quinn Walker might be one to watch. 8/10 --
