I know, but take the chance. An emo band (well, they are lumped into that ill category, but they are so much more) with a long pretentious name releases a record complete with handwritten liner notes and personal statements, and you want to run. But for once, run toward it, not away. ?Year of the Rabbit? is emotional and earnest, yes, but it is also powerful and moving.
Almost every track here is infused with real emotion and killer musical touches. ?Where Angels Crowd to Listen? is a guitar-driven, angst fest but with real beauty. The dreamy ?And Ever Since? is hypnotic and moving; the somber, percussive ?In Your Room? is nakedly honest and features one of the best lines on the record: ?the words carry more weight than you?re worth?.
Vocalist Keith Latinen (his sister Kathy also sings and shares guitar duties with him) is snarky and wounded, often in the same song. That passion and risk is met head-on by the band. Whose rhythm section keeps a steady but slightly off-kilter beat, adding welcome tension.
?Year of the Rabbit? is emotional and dramatic yes, but Empire! Empire! (I was a lonely estate) carry a poise and power that makes their rants and ruing raw and honest. 7/10 --
