This trans-Atlantic collaboration alternates between the varied sonic landscapes of multi-artist and electronic musician Christophe Bailleau and the indie-folk songs of Possible Selves brainchild, Neal Williams. “On Soft Mountains We Work Magic” can sound closer to a split release in places, if not for Bailleau’s sonic wizardry that provides a backdrop to Williams’ songs and offers some degree of cohesion here. The middle section of the album yields some of the more engaging results of this collaboration. For example, “A Lucky Dip” finds Bailleau disrupting the country crawl of Williams by injecting some fluttery sounds and feedback into the mix. The following track “Emulette” sounds like a digitized take on the “Dead Man” soundtrack, whereas “Future Plans” opens with some NWW-style editing that gradually settles into one of Williams delicate folk songs. The melding of electronic and folk music is nothing new at this point, but this collaboration approaches it in an intelligent manner that avoids the shortcomings of music that typically bears the ‘folktronica’ tag. 7/10 --
