I have seen this name somewhat loosely associated with Machinefabriek a few times, and I think that that is a pretty accurate association to make in the grand scheme of things. Although Jasper TX has a fairly different approach (that being that this is really, at its core, meditational guitar music) they do seem to tread some similar sonic waters; those of the musician as sound sculptor rather than the more traditional tunesmith.
This particular release on 3” CD is probably most impressive due to the perfect use of the format. Most of the time I a left feeling a little let down, or a little overwhelmed by this format due to its inherent time constraints; not quite a full length album, and quite a bit more than a 7” allows. In this case however I am left with the feeling of a complete statement having been made rather than an incomplete sentence, or a long winded diatribe on a singular topic.
Never straying too far from a sparse whisper, while employing a broad range of tones from breathy plucks to harsh punctuations of feedback; this is an instrument whose potential textures have been put to full use. Is this sort of genre-defying exploration of a world of sound the future of music? Dear god let’s hope so. 9/10 --
