You know those bands that try to combine 70s rock with lame 90s rock and end up sounding like bad copies of bands that were already shitty? Private Dancer offers relief from your despair. “Trouble Eyes” borrows from the 70s, but in wise and irreverent ways, and it slaps most of the 90s upside the head with its chops and smarts. This is loud, snotty Rawk with heart, thank god.
Comprised of members of bands of varying goodness like Heroine Chic, STNNNG and Falcon Crest, Private Dancer keep the grooves centered on the pelvis. Most of the songs here will stick in your head for one reason or another, either due to catchy/chunky riffs or deft lyrics, but “1000 Year Wave,” “She’s a Company Man” and “Do The Hotdog” stand out. The triple guitar line-up makes the most of the extra sonic weapons. The rhythm section keeps a steady beat, preferring to pound away and let the other guys run for the glory. Bassist Jessie Kwakenat particularly excels.
“Trouble Eyes” is merely the latest in the long line of funny, smart rocking discs to emerge out of Minneapolis, but Private Dancer carve out their own space at the party with this smokin’ set. 8/10 --
