Eivind Opsvik is half of duo Opsvik & Jennings, who have released albums on Rune Grammofon and NCM East. Although this album is credited to Opsvik solo, it is actually the third album by his ensemble Overseas. The album combines jazz, electroacoustics, and progressive and classic rock influences. The opening piece, “Neil”, is obviously influenced by Neil Young as far as its rhythm, but uses a few other elements you might not expect from a Young recording. A few other pieces such as “Ginger Rogers” are more influenced by classic jazz and orchestral music. “Breath Of Bark” has more of a country-rock influence, blending steel guitar with free-jazz saxophone skronk. The final piece, 15-minute “Lull Of Lumber”, is influenced by Pink Floyd, and sort of acts as a jazz counterpart to “Echoes”.

This isn’t the type of album I’d usually go crazy over, but it’s definitely unique. The genre blends seem a bit odd at first but make sense the more you listen. It’s also quite relaxing, even during the more out-there moments. 6/10 -- Paul Simpson (17 March, 2009)
