Atte Nylppänen is certainly not an easy act to find information about. Outside of a two-sentence blurb on the Wooden Sherpa website, Atte has virtually no web presence. The "Kehitystä Vastaan" CDR has a cute plush doll on the cover and is filled with lots of Finnish text that I have no hope of ever deciphering. It is only just that the music on "Kehitystä Vastaan" is every bit as mysterious and bizarre.

Listening to "Kehitystä Vastaan" invokes visions of being trapped in a funhouse filled with psychotics waving meat cleavers. Atte makes a mess all over the place on this CDR, using everything from guitars, voice, and tape loops to found objects like kettles, corks and cans. Improvisational chaos with a nervous tick seems to be the overall approach here. Maniacal cackling is paired with odd blips and boops on "Jarmo Petzl, Joonas Peltz ja Jappe Pläts." Atte spastically pounds the guitar, piling on layers of effects in the psych-drone jam "Neptunuksessa nunnan naama."

While "Kehitystä Vastaan" is occasionally interesting, the hits are far too sporadic. This varied, kitchen sink approach is nothing new and it has certainly been realized better by other artists in the past. The haphazard nature of "Kehitystä Vastaan" works to its detriment, as its ideas just aren't strong enough to hold one's attention for its entire runtime. 4/10 -- Robert Oberlander (7 April, 2009)
