Another wide-ranging effort from Evening Fires, this time the trio of Kevin Moist, Nathaniel Rasmussen, and Ben Wentz, most of whom are actively involved in the Deep Water Acres website and label. Reportedly recorded in various subterranean locations with no post-production trickery, “Blue Mountain Water” indeed captures a mysterious, cavernous tone perhaps best exemplified on the hypnotic shaker/bongo groove fest “Possum in the Void” or the more abrasive electric guitar resonances of “Bituminous Helmet”. Elsewhere, the group set varying acoustic guitar techniques against a backdrop of amorphous sounds. On the opener “Stone Creek” this involves a droning chord organ and “Smoker Station” contains some fairly opiated recorder work; whereas, the brief closing track “Sawmill Blaze” shows some rockist banjo/guitar interplay. All the ingredients are there, including a rather cool beer label insert, so drink up. 7/10 --
