I have to admit that the concept of this tape is really hilarious to me, and when I first got this in my pack of stuff to review I was ecstatic. I told a few friends about it too- "I got this tape and it's literally just someone playing guitar solos over Alanis Morissette songs!", this was usually followed by some laughter and all around agreement that it was a great idea. I mean, the songs are the kind of pop-trash that is begging for appropriation.
The harsh reality though is that this tape is pretty awful. How could it really be otherwise though? I mean, out of tune guitar solos played over entire Alanis Morissette songs... really? I don't know, it's still pretty hilarious... but just so very bad. The guitar tone horrendous and out of place- it has to be intentional, but just not enjoyable. The last track is the most interesting I guess. It mixes "Thank You" with another song I'm not familiar with for dizzyingly sick results.
So, I really am not sure how to review something like this. It's clearly got some serious novelty appeal, and I can see myself playing it for friends for a couple minutes to get some laughs. I think I'd be more interested if the tape felt like it was pulled from some anonymous Alanis fan who was playing his heart out along with these awful songs -instead I feel like this is just in it for the laughs. After all, ironic appropriation is easier to pull off than raw feeling. 3/10 --
