Oh my goodness, Blue Sabbath Black Fiji have been rocking my world these last couple of days. “Gemini”, one of the more recent entries to the Scottish duo’s ever-expanding catalogue of cdr (and tape) releases, is a devastating tour de force of guitar-based noise rock. Forget the drones, forget metal, this is where it’s at. Like a hyperactive little brother of La Otracina or a nervous mute (there’s no vocals here, none at all) high-speed-dubbing his Mammatus tape, Charles Lavenac and Janin Benecke lead a stampede through withered gardens of noise psychedelia. The second track with its ten minutes of frenzied, distorted riffing has to be my favourite. It’s entitled “Sun Ra Was a Wookie” – anxiety of influence, anyone? Later on, with tracks like “Deep Gravy”, the duo takes an unexpected turn towards more electronic stomping but firmly remains in the red. Think Les Georges Leningrad with cowbells. Way recommended and still available from the label. 8/10 --
