Serge Modular devotees make their synth of choice shine on this pleasing compilation. The hulking panel of furniture/sound machine seems capable of nearly anything and the approaches to the Serge are as varied as the countries represented. Versatile Serge sounds range from garbled noise and diaphanous drone to IDM and space rock. Many selections have a retro ray gun quality though a few sound modern and plastic. On Jan-Hinnerk Helms’ opener “Welcome to the Serge Modular Music CD 2009”, the equipment is used as a vocoder and the liner notes are nice enough to tell you how it’s done. Most of the liner notes in fact are filled with gear tips and tech acronyms. A lot of the pointers were lost on my non-gear self, but I still enjoyed hearing the Serge’s colorful spectrum of capabilities. Produced by Hans Grüsel. 7/10 --
