Jean-Sébastien Truchy has become what I consider a close confidante over the last few years. Through his various projects (including the exquisite E.S./I.S., who had a tape on Digitalis last year) and Los Discos Enfantasmes label, he has continually stretched my brain to the breaking point. With this new tape, …Arises The Wind and Fire of Wisdom…, it is being smashed into smithereens.
In scope, approach, and impact, this album is monumental. For me, it’s Truchy’s most defining solo work to date in that it is a perfect encapsulation of so many ideas he’s been honing these last few years. Bubbling electronics and modular synthesizer compositions are molded and shaped into some kind of sprawling, weirdly-cohesive sonic architecture. On the surface it doesn’t seem to make sense – it shouldn’t make sense – but as the sounds rise and fall, the picture Truchy is painting becomes clear. What holds it all together is Truchy’s vocals. With a nod to Tazartes and the like, he utterly lets go. Operatic stylings soar across haunting chord changes and you become enveloped in this moment of someone finally letting go of the past with a hint of regret, but still embracing the promise of what is ahead. It will infect you, destroy you, and make you better because of it. …Arises The Wind and Fire of Wisdom… is a truly inspired piece of work.
